Move user profiles

Registry method

NB: This is a fairly easy method which requires Registry editing shortly after installation to change location of profiles, When installing, create a temporary user name (e.g. me). That account will become inoperative after the move.

  1. Unhide hidden files
  2. Copy the original Default and Public profiles from C:\Users to the new location
  3. In RegEdit open HKEY_LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  4. Change the value of the Default, Public and ProfilesDirectory keys to the new location
  5. Hide files again.
  6. Log off. From this point on, any new user logged in will get a profile in the new location.

NB: The attached .reg files contain the settings for C:\users and D:\users respectively.
